Ear Wax Removal: Manual Cleaning
Manual cleaning is done by first looking into the ear using an otoscope. This is a handheld device that lights up and magnifies the ear canal to help determine the quantity and consistency of wax.
Once the the quantity and consistency has been determined, the wax can be removed using a tool called a curette. There are different types and shapes of this tool to allow for various sizes of ear canal. A combination of tools can be used to loosen the wax and then remove it.
An LED wand may also be used to light up the ear canal whilst using the curette.

Ear Wax Removal: Suction Method
Suction method can be used if a person has particularly sensitive ears or skin within the ear canal.
Like the manual method, suction is done by first looking into the ear using an otoscope. This is a handheld device that lights up and magnifies the ear canal to help determine the quantity, position and consistency of wax.
Once the quantity and position of wax has been determined, a small, handheld machine that acts like a vacuum is used to suction the wax from the ear. The soft, flexible tip helps to gently loosen the wax and the vacuum then suctions it out.
Although gentle, this method alone may not remove all the wax built up within the ear canal.

Ear Wax Removal: Combination Method
The Combination Method uses both manual cleaning and suction to provide optimum results. With excessive wax build up, or hardened wax, this method may be best.
First I look into the ear using an otoscope. This is a handheld device that lights up and magnifies the ear canal to help determine the quantity and consistency of wax.
Then I use a tool called a curette to loosen and remove as much wax as possible. The remaining wax can be loosened and then I use the handheld machine to suction the remaining wax. A small brush can then be used to remove any debris, such as dead or dry skin cells and smaller wax pieces.

For those that battle against a frequent build up of ear wax, it is recommended to have the ears checked and cleaned every 8 weeks. This helps to prevent hearing loss and a build up of bacteria, leading to ear infections. I appreciate that this battle can be both frustrating and expensive. For this reason, I offer an annual care package. The package includes 6 full ear wax removal appointments and 2 follow up or check up appointments.
